In 2004, Allan and Trish Gainer decided to open a bookstore in Cheney, Tree of Knowledge Bookstore, knowing that Allene had something special and the Gainers wanted to carry her dream. However, the Gainers knew that in order to stay profitable, they needed another niche. Allan had worked in the textbook market as a textbook manager at Boise State University and as a college publisher representative for Houghton Mifflin. He carried the knowledge and understood that the market was ripe for a competing textbook store for Eastern Washington University students...thus creating an alternative market to save the students money on their textbooks.

The Gainers started the store with their entire savings and choose Historice Downtown Cheney, close to campus. In the early days, there were some struggles with advertising to the students and striving to gain recognition in the community as both a metaphysical bookstore and a textbook store. However, prayers prevailed.

With time and hard work, Tree of Knowledge Bookstore has branched out with more inventory: such as ceremonial and metaphysical items such as books, kits, crystals, herbs, pendulums, incense, tarot cards, and jewelry; expanded EWU merchandise such as apparel, gifts, reference materials, Dakine backpacks and school supplies; increased inventory of traditional books such as self-help, world religions, history, business, classical and contemporary literature, poetry, mysteries, science fiction, horror, romance, adolescent and children's area; and gifts for that special interests such as collectable painted ponies, painted guitars and much, much more. Every week something new arrives in the store.

Today, Tree of Knowledge Bookstore service many people in the community with metaphysical books, gifts and ceremonial materials. The store is thriving with over 20,000 titles in stock and employs their own on-staff practitioner, Rich Baker. Tree of Knowledge Bookstore is revered as the largest metaphysical store in the Spokane region and still growing. The store has continued growing with a number of events throughout the month. Tree of Knowledge Bookstore is growing in the EWU community with its lowest priced textbooks in Cheney. Also, they offer alternative styles of EWU clothing and gifts. Recently, the store introduced the Monavie line of all-natural health functional beverages and all-natural energy drinks, EMV. This product line features the Acai berry through a patented process that only Monavie can use to keep over 90% of its nutritional value along with 18 other fruits to give you up to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables by drinking four ounces per day.

With this website, Tree of Knowledge is reaching beyond its limited realm and into the world. As the Tree of Knowledge Boosktore travels through time, Tree of Knowledge Bookstore keeps growing their branches of products and services to the Cheney community and now the rest of the world. As in our name, we open the knowledge of all in our store without prejudice.

The memory of Allene Malley lives within our bookstore today in spirit as she was the mother of Trish Gainer. Without her, Tree of Knowledge Bookstore wouldn't be here.
